New Government Focus on Road Safety in Mozambique
September 19, 2008
A co-operation initiated by MotorCare in Mozambique The Mozambican government's National Traffic Institute (INAV) plans to stop thousands of vehicles in the streets of Maputo, the neighboring city of Matola and the central port of Beira to inspect the vehicles for technical defects. They anticiapte to inspect 50.000 vehicles during a three-month safety and visability campaign.
The deputy director of INAV, Jorge Muiambo, said in a recent issue of the independent newspaper Mediafax that; “these inspections are not intended to punish negligent drivers but to warn them of the dangers of driving vehicles that are defective."
- Drivers of defective cars will not get a fine but instead be informed of its consequences.
On Day One of the inspections, between 08.00 and 11.30 in the morning a total of 261 vehicles in all categories were inspected. All drivers were made aware of the importance of road safety.
Muiambo said he hoped this campaign, which will run from mid-August until mid-November 2008, will reduce the number of traffic accidents on Mozambican roads. He expects that in Maputo alone 50,000 vehicles will be inspected. The government is, some time in the near future, planning to introduce compulsory regular testing of all vehicles.
The campaign is linked with MotorCare Mozambique’s own Road Safety campaign promoting the “10 Principles” of road safety.
